A few days ago, I returned from a week of frolicking on the West Coast, where I visited family and friends I hadn't seen in over two years. I spent one afternoon in San Francisco with a good friend from college. After visiting world-famous City Lights Books, we walked around North Beach for a bit, and happened upon a funky little music shop. My friend, who plays in a few punk bands, wanted to stop in and check out some guitars. I smelled a music nerdy photo op!

Flying-V Ukelele, for all your Hawaiian Heavy Metal needs!
Musicians often refer to their instrument is their "ax," but this takes it to a whole 'nother level!
Cute animal guitars for kids! They're smaller scale and have built-in speakers (The shop owner confessed that the sound is not great, but they sure are cute!)
Panda
Giraffe
A very home-spun uke – check the heart-shaped sound hole! :)
...and the coconut shell resonator on the back:
Here's a Balalaika, to help you keep your comrade warm:
And here's a Kora, an instrument from West Africa – I'd never seen one in person before!
Back view:
On the left, a miniature Sitar, and on the right, a Veena:
Hey, how'd that get in here??
And as usual, the keyboard instruments are used as furniture – harrumph!
And now, today's Top Comments!
From JanF:
In Sunday's Morning Feature, this late reply from DBunn to a Top Comment by addisnana deserves a Top Comment nomination of its own for his description of the Tea Party GOP:
"To keep from losing elections on rational grounds, pollute the language so that no one knows what words mean any more. Do everything opposite from reality, so no one knows what's real any more. Have Beck assume the civil rights mantle of MLK Jr. Assert that freedom means you are free to lose your home-- too bad, your fault. Announce that green energy will wreck the economy. Explain that the reason you are poor is that rich people aren't rich enough. Blame unemployment on the unemployed, the lazy f*cks. Make it seem indisputable that religious freedom applies to everyone who believes in one particular religion, but to no one else. Insist in a loud voice that government, no matter how small, should nevertheless control your reproduction and choice of marriage partner."
From BlueJessamine:
In this diary, Interview of Markos Moulitsas, Founder of DailyKos by Cenk Uygur, Dallasdoc has this excellent comment addressing the "weenie liberals" and the phony idea of American Exceptionalism.
In this morning's open thread, Detroit Mark shares a story about a guy walking through the woods who runs into a fairy. She says, "I can grant you one wish..."
In this morning's Cheers & Jeers poll, Bill in Portland Maine asks, "Would your kitchen pass a restaurant health inspection?" In the comments, flumptytail responds with "My kitchen is spotless at all times." Along with this photo to show his technique. ;-)
From benintn:
In a solid and encouraging strategy diary from mememememe, Jonze's "comment" is really just a pointer to his signature line. And it's the signature line that should be read by every Democrat - heck, every adult - in the United States.
From Land of Enchantment:
N in Seattle made me laugh in today's last call for the NN11 fall auction from McJoan.
