Do you know these "people" too? Bet you do.
Let me tell you about some "people" I know. These "people" are very wealthy, most of them with assets and revenues in the hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars. They own most of the real estate in America, and they hold mortgages on most of the property they don't own.
These "people" almost destroyed the economy through a financial crisis of their own making. Yet, because they are so immensely powerful, they have many Americans convinced that the solution is to regulate them LESS!
These "people," of course, are corporations. According to the law, corporations are indeed legal "people," and according to the Supreme Court corporations have virtually all the rights that real people enjoy. This can be problematic, because corporations exist legally for just one main purpose - to make profits. In fact, corporations are run by directors and officers who can be sued if they breach their obligation - and that obligation is to make money.
Thus, these "people" have no real moral sense. They will do whatever they can to make money, within the bounds of the law. And speaking of the law, because corporations are so wealthy they have well-paid lobbyists who ensure that the laws are written to their benefit, and they have excellent lawyers to make sure the law gets interpreted in their favor. All of this helps them to achieve the goal of their existence - making profits.
This amoral nature is why these "people" created an entire industry that enthusiastically encouraged real people to habitually ingest carcinogens. Only a ruthless "person" would happily introduce young children to a product that causes cancer, and these "people" are indeed ruthless.
With enormous wealth to pay for slick advertising, political lobbying, and legal teams, these "people" were able to resist the public interest for generations, thereby profiting by killing consumers. Today these tobacco companies pretend they have reformed their ways, but they still prey on consumers to the extent they can, especially in poor countries (which they see as growing markets) where they promote and sell their products zealously.
These "people" also profit from making you fat. They have good PR teams to convince you that they care about your health and that they don't want you to get fat, but don't be fooled - they want you to supersize it! These "people" profit from convincing you to eat lots of junk that satisfies primal cravings for sweet and salty foods.
These "people" also profit from war. Though they lobby for "small government" (which to them simply means low taxes on their profits) they really want big, powerful government - a huge military that provides these "people" with an immense cash flow. And since fear and ignorance fuel war fever, these "people" profit from fear and ignorance, so therefore they encourage it.
These "people" can spend millions and millions of dollars to utilize mass media to promote their own public image. They make cute and clever ads that make you laugh. But if you or I were like these "people" - amoral (if not immoral), obsessed with greed, and totally narcissistic - we'd be considered mentally ill, even sociopathic.
These "people" control the mass media because they own it. They don't want you to think critically, because that would make you question their authority and their power. They entertain you, and that keeps you passive.
These "people" have little interest in real democracy - they just want open markets, and personal freedoms are rarely an important consideration to them. They know their wealth and power easily trump yours and mine. These amoral and narcissistic "people" own the country, from the skyscrapers to the media outlets to the political system to the legal system. They'll let you vote, so long as it's within the very narrow framework of their economic system, and so long as they really control the political system.
By the way, the Supreme Court says all the above is fine. It's the Supreme Court that insists that these "people" have just about all the rights that real people have. And since these "people" have immeasurably more wealth than real people have, they actually hold all the power.
We need to amend the Constitution to show these "people" who is really boss, to remind corporations that they are merely a legal fiction and not real people at all.
