I did a search and found nothing on this.
The revelations of one Adrian Schoolcraft. He was an NYPD beat officer (Brooklyn) who believed that cops are there to protect the people - he was an officer until the brass got uncomfortable with his refusal to go along with illegal orders.
I was astounded by the report I heard on public radio about Adrian Schoolcraft, another "Serpico."
At least Mr. Schoolcraft didn't get seriously injured but he was kidnapped and placed in a mental hospital. He questioned quotas, which are illegal to request/order of police, and other orders (such as to arrest everyone and figure out the charges later.)
Mr. Schoolcraft's father is a retired NYPD whom he kept informed of what was going on. When what Schoolcraft was being orderd to do started to cross into the illegal, he bought a mini recorder and kept it in his shirt pocket.
He developed chest and stomach pains due to the stress of being berated and threatened, in the course of his work. He was sent to a police doctor who sent him to a police psychologist who insisted that he turn in his shield and weapon. She told him that it was required of officers who expierenced chest pains (not true.)
After leaving work one day, which had become desk duty, because of feeling ill an hour early whith the knowledge of his Commanding Officer, Adrian Schoolcraft was kidnapped from his home and placed in a mental institution for six days. If he hadn't had his father who was aware of the situation, he might still be in that institution and perhaps on the verge of madness.
He has a lawsuit against them for 50 million... I hope he gets it.
The story detailed the NYPD not recording crimes as what they were. They would "downgrade" the crime from rape to assault. The would, in some cases, not take statements at all. Saying to victims, like - what's the use, you won't get your property back anyway (thereby making crime stats look much better.)
When they came for him (after leaving work an hour early) and banged on his door, he switched on a tape recorder. He has it all on tape. They kidnapped him and committed him to a psych ward for six days. Truly scary.
They took away his career. I hope he prevails.
