We'll see what the results are Tuesday. I think the Dems may win Louisiana while losing the other two races. But the bigger point is that it is becoming more and more difficult for the Dems to win in the south. Even with 90% plus of the African-American vote, which is sizeable in states such as Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina and Georgia, the Dems still get beat. The combination of religious fundamentalism, jingoism and social darwinist economics seems to have a firm grasp over 2/3 to 3/4 of the white vote. Even conservative Dems such as Hodges, Barnes and now possibly Musgrove can't shake that grip. Gore couldn't win his home state. John Edwards would probably be an underdog in his. Even a four-star general such as Wesley Clark would have to fight to win Arkansas. And there's no guarantee he'd win any other southern states.
In short, should we just give up and write off the South, save for Florida, which in large part is not a traditional southern state?
