Lobbying Against the People
The Albuquerque Journal has started what appears to be a campaign against the New Mexico Wild Horse State Park.
The newspaper has attempted to slam Governor Richardson for proposing to include a Wild Horse Sanctuary as part of a 12,000 acre expansion of Cerrillos State Park, with two recent opinion pieces masquerading as news articles, the latest of which is featured at the top of the front page.
In the first of their articles, the Journal tried the "What about the Children" approach, arguing for a false choice between providing child care subsidies to needy families and purchasing land for the State Park. However, once Governor Richardson helped resolve the child care issue, the Albuquerque Journal responded with a second article, which denys and attacks all wild horses.

New Mexico has directed 8.18% of its $3.9 billion of Federal stimulus funds to the "Family Safety Net". The proposed expansion of Cerrillos State Park would take 0.07%.

Governor Bill Richardson is Leading New Mexico toward a more civil society. "Civil society is the bedrock for human development and democratic governance, and ultimately makes a just and humane society possible". Helmut K Anheier 1 September 1999 Alliance magazine.
Opinions are interesting, but legally, and factually, the Placitas horses as many other herds are legally wild. The West is famous for it's Wild horses, legally and otherwise. Why not allow the West it's economic development through Tourism? It is hard to grasp the Journal's real agenda from it's ever changing attacks.
The Journal denied the very existence of two federally protected legally Wild Horse Territories: The Jicarilla and Jarita Mesa National Wild Horse Territories in the beautiful Carson National Forest in Northern New Mexico.

To be present on Dec 15th 1971, have no brand, and also not be claimed with show of proof, makes the horses legally wild under the Federal 1971 Free Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act. "No other issue in America — aside from the Vietnam War — has generated such public outcry as the plight of our nation's wild horses. There was more input by Americans on this federal legislation than any other issue outside the Vietnam War". Per The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaingn at www.wildhorsepreservation.org/problems/aums2.html. A Newspaper cannot legislate this away from the people.
Native or not is not the question here. Wolves and prairie dogs are native with no dispute, but they are still being erradicated from the landscapes. Legally wild is the question, and a newspaper cannot legislate that away.
Journalists and the news media should seek to obtain the facts from a variety of sources, rather than merely repeating misleading information and opinions from a select group.
The Journal has not responded this week to WHOA's attempts to contact them.
