Kudos to the diarists working on the Feeding America campaign this weekend. The absolute last thing that Help Pakistan wants to do is to compete for donations. Go and rec up the latest diary and help out if you can.
But don't you forget about our brothers and sisters around the world who are still suffering and dying.
Help Pakistan is a group dedicated to getting needed humanitarian support to flood ravaged Pakistan, and disseminating information pertaining to the floods to the dailykos community at large. Our goal is getting donations to those people who need it most.
If you have a negative comment pertaining to Pakistan, its people, its culture, or its relationship with the United States, please refrain from making it here. If you would like to be a part of our group, please click the picture at the very bottom of this diary. We would love more volunteers to help us with the burden of getting a diary up every day.
Heavier than usual monsoons hit Pakistan on July 22. The country has withstood flooding like this in the past, but Global Climate change and massive deforestation exacerbated the flooding this year. The Indus River, usually the lifeline for Pakistan's rural population turned into a devastating force, killing thousands and displacing millions. And the problem is not just tree's role in preventing soil erosion.
Pakistan floods aggravated by deforestation and other ecological mistakes
"We are receiving reports that there was a lot of logging in the area done by the timber mafia, and they used to throw those logs in the river, using the river as a form of transportation. So when the floods came, the logs turned into missiles in the water. And they crashed into houses and into bridges, breaking a lot of infrastructure."
Just imagine a tree rushing down the river and hitting your house. This is part of the reason more than 20 million people have been affected. More numbing stats:
At least 15,847 village affected
1,915,053 Home damaged or destroyed
An estimated 10,000 schools destroyed
1.2 million head of livestock and 6 million head of poultry lost and many more dead due to lack of veterinary care
$2 billion needed over the next year with only $615 million given and another $52.6 million pledged.

Ich bin Deutsche:
Germany increases its pledge to 35 million Euro for flood victims of Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Sep 24 (APP): Germany has increased its humanitarian assistance to the flood affected areas of Pakistan to Euro 35 million (Rs. 3.75 billion) which will be disbursed through various international organizations and NGOs. German ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Michael Koch while addressing a press conference here at German embassy said this Euro 35 million pledge equal to $47 million, is from German government alone while in kind assistance from German Ministry of Defence was in addition to this help.
Actually, I'm only a quarter German of Pa. Dutch stock. I got a C in my college German class. I wish I could speak German though and understand this telethon from Aug. 27 that apparently raised eight million Euros with the help of Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Some other news.
US, UK vow long-term help to flood-hit Pakistan
WASHINGTON: The United Kingdom and the United States are committed to ensuring the most effective possible international response to Pakistan’s ongoing flood disaster, British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and US Vice President Joseph Biden said in a joint statement.
"We recognise the enormous scale of the devastation and Pakistan’s humanitarian and recovery needs," the two leaders said in the statement after meeting at the White House.
UN says Pakistan's Sindh still hit by floods
A UN agency says severe flooding is continuing in parts of Pakistan's southern Sindh province.
The Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says many families are still marooned on small islands with their livestock.
Despite the conditions, many displaced families across Pakistan are returning to their villages, OCHA says.
Pakistan and the MDGs
The three-day high-level Plenary Meeting of the UN General Assembly to review a decade of progress of the Millennium Development Goals, ended this week in New York. Running almost parallel to the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, the flood crisis of Pakistan was a headliner at both these high-profile events. Only a weekend prior was the official launch of the Pakistan Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Report 2010, in Islamabad.

Pakistan is no different. Still reeling from the impact of the recent floods, the Pakistan government indicated that the country had failed to achieve many of the MDG targets due to slow economic growth, severe energy crisis, the war on terror and recent humanitarian catastrophes which has now set back the country by at least two years.

I might have to start listening to a band calling itself Deer Tick:
Deer Tick auction tour bus for charity
Deer Tick has announced that it will auction off the tour bus it used on all of its 2009 US tours, nicknamed "The Flagship" (from the band’s 2009 album Born on Flag Day). A generous portion of proceeds will go to benefit Pakistan flood victims through a partnership with Oxfam America.
According to the Government of Pakistan, some 17 million have been affected by the flooding. U.N. undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, John Holmes, has called the floods "unprecedented".
"The situation over there is so critical, but it seems that very few people are aware of it," said Deer Tick frontman John McCauley. "Maybe it’s the stigma with that part of the world, I’m not sure. Either way, we feel really strongly that people should be more aware of the situation and hopefully we can help with that."
Bids are up to $2,000. The eBay action is here.
Finally, in the spirit of not forgetting, millions of people have been displaced by flooding in Nigeria.
Nigeria floods displace millions
Almost half of the population in Nigeria's central-northern Jigawa state has been displaced after authorities had to open floodgates on two swollen rivers.
"We have about two million people affected," in a state which has 4.3 million people, Umar Kyari, the spokesman of Jigawa state, said on Friday.
He said the flooding was caused after authorities opened floodgates of the Challawa and Tiga dams in neighbouring Kano state to avoid overflowing following heavy rains.
