Senate won't take 4th of July vacation: Unlike Boehner, Reid cancels recess

Boehner should follow Reid's lead
 

Even though House Republicans are on vacation through July 7, Harry Reid isn't offering his Senate colleagues the same luxury, saying that with so much work to get done, Congress can't afford to take a break now:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has officially cancelled next week’s 4th of July recess for the Senate to continue the ongoing deficit and debt negotiations.

“It is often said that with liberty comes responsibility,” Senator Reid, D-NV., said on the Senate floor this morning, “We should take that responsibility seriously. I’m confident we do. That’s why the Senate will reconvene on Tuesday, the day after the 4th. We’ll do that because we have work to do.”

Yesterday, President Obama said House Republicans shouldn't be on vacation with the debt limit looming. Today, Mark Halperin called him "a dick" for saying that and the New York Times worried that it might force Republicans to destroy America.

Reid's decision is the right one—to stay at work and keep it until the job is done. And as pundits used to be so fond of saying (at least when they were talking about Republicans), it's the adult decision.
