Welcome to Networking Politics!
A message from the editor:
First, thank you for visiting this blog. This concept has developed over several months and your interest and support will ultimately ensure its success.
A brief introduction – my name is Caysey Welton. I am a 30-something restaurant professional turned full-time undergraduate student majoring in political science. To fulfill an honors program requirement, I am responsible for a semester-long independent project. After months of deliberation, the concept of this blog organically developed.
This is a tumultuous time in American politics, compounded by a growing epidemic of political apathy. Participation is the key to a strong and stable democracy. Many feel as though they are not being heard, and many more are simply misinformed or uniformed about vital policy initiatives. However, I believe there is one element that can help resuscitate American democracy – social networking.
Social networking has moved beyond a youth driven fad. It is now a powerful communication instrument that instantly shares limitless real time information across the globe. The aim of Networking Politics is to explore and promote political communications through social networking.
Digital media has had an immense impact on the way people communicate. Social networks provide the means for an individual to express himself or herself freely and honestly. The 2008 elections proved that social networking could increase visibility and encourage participation. However, since the election this medium has failed to sustain political enthusiasm. Networking Politics aims to recapture that enthusiasm. Think of this blog as a sociological experiment in democracy.
What readers can expect:
• Daily news, videos, and editorial pieces from a variety of sources (including myself).
• A variety of perspectives, from socialist to fascist, and everyone in between.
• Reader inspired polls.
• Political cartoons and other humor pieces.
• Up to the minute updates on Facebook and Twitter.
• Ability to share content with friends on over 300 networks.
• Access and direct updates with your mobile devices.
Ultimately, NP’s goal is to provide a free speech forum. And most importantly, encourage everyone to take an active role in the democratic process. I do not expect this blog to change the world. But, I do hope to start a small movement that encourages people to discuss important issues openly and honestly. It is imperative that people come together and discuss issues that directly impact their lives. That is how our Nation was founded, and that is how our Nation will continue to evolve.
Thank You,
Caysey Welton
