CNN has spent most of 2011 pushing Larry King's successor Piers Morgan. Almost every single day, they've had his name on the front page, for no other reason than to attempt to give him publicity and momentum. CNN knows, obviously, that Mr. Morgan does not have any better credentials in serious journalism than Sean Hannity. In fact, I'm more likely to trust the general contractor than the guy who was fired from a British tabloid for being dishonest (which at a British tabloid is pretty much the first line in the job description).
I realize that this guy is supposed to mostly do celebrity interviews and fluff pieces, but it's hard for CNN to give air time to Morgan, while at the same time position themselves as a serious news channel. The Faux News crowd only has to point to Morgan as an example of a deplorable journalist in order to discredit the CNN organization.
Piers Morgan is interested in being on TV as much as possible. CNN is interested in ratings. All the American Idle[*] carbon copy shows where Morgan played the cookie cutter role of the rude Brit got ratings. So they both win. Right? I guess we will find out if the American audience buys what they're selling.
[*] Yes, that's intentional. And yes, it's also a copycat show.
