In reading the diaries of people here at Kos who have trouble at their workplace, I'm always compelled to put in my two cents because it's what I do for a living. I've sat on both sides of the table- first for management and now for labor- and I've worked in civil rights investigations as well.
There are lots of other Kossacks out there with either legal experience or legitimate HR experience (that is not exclusively of the 'support-management-at-all-costs' variety.
And many others here have simply had some experiences and issues in their workplaces that would serve as good lessons to us all- not to mention curl our hair at how outrageous things can get when people think they can get away with anything.
We have lots of great series here at Kos- stuff for writers, people quitting smoking, people with health issues, people in mourning, people with dogs and cats, people who what to know what you're eating for dinner, what your f*cking problem is, or why you're a Loser on Saturday nights. People who want to learn more about history, people who enjoy words (Purple Priestess, I'm looking at you!), and people who like to chat about books. There's a series out there for everyone, it seems!
I'm thinking about whether the community would benefit from a weekly (?) series on workplace issues.
The format could follow a few different styles:
Option 1: Request workplace issues/questions to be submitted and then a researched response would be presented in the diary.
Option 2: Present a general topic with some discussion in the diary and open the discussion to comments.
Option 3: Present specific cases decided recently in various courts around the country and open the discussion to comments.
I would assume that in any of these scenarios, someone could present their workplace concern and have a bunch of people provide advice.
And of course the big caveat that none of our advice should be considered legal advice and that those who request help do so at their own risk.
I just feel that with so many people out of work or stuck in jobs they hate because of the economy, this might be a good time to try to help people with issues in a place that sucks up so much of our time- WORK! Not to mention that the small business owners among us with employees could benefit from this series as well.
Your thoughts? If you like the idea, please state in the comments what you think we should call the series and if you're interested in helping out, please let me know.
NOTE- this is a repost of a diary from a few days back that I posted late at night when there weren't many people around to put in their two cents. I wanted to get a broader response from people before proceeding in developing such a series. Thanks!
