There are some words that it's just a pleasure to read/and or articulate.
Here is one:
"galoot"
defined at dictionary reference.com as an "awkward, eccentric, or foolish person"
Of course, it's typically paired with "big"
What words would you like to see more often?
On the other hand, what words drive you crazy?
Although it's now two years into the Obama term, I still cringe when I hear "cling" and "embolden"
aaargh, I hate those words, and yet they still cling to the public discourse like verbal dingleberries.
words I like:
scotch (as in repair -- hence "scotch tape" -- is that derived from a derogatory term for Scots, I wonder, as persons of Scottish descent were popularly thought to be penny pinchers). I like it when somebody in MacBeth says "we have scotched the snake, not killed (or possibly kill'd) it (or possibly the whole quote is wrong)"
dastardly, with its dashing bastardly consonance
I hate the term "the 'n' word" -- I wish we could come up with another word or phrase for it
I said "retarded" and meant "slowed" the other day, and wondered if I had committed a faux pas
words can be fireworks or bombs or IED's or minefields
what are your favorites? which ones make you itch?
UPDATE!
I need to go off and make dinner, but I'll be back to tabulate the good words and stick them back into the body of the diary, since editing the poll has stymied me -- thanks for all the wonderful words, logophiles!
