Only in Floriduh could this happen. During the last election one of the items on the ballot was a constitutional amendment that says political districts must be drawn fairly and not gerrymandered to favor one political party over another, and the republicans fought this tooth and nail. Now in Florida in order for a constitutional amendment to become law it must pass with a super majority of 60% of the vote. It was approved by 63%.
Now it appears the republicans are still going to fight it since districts must be redrawn this year and so they filed a lawsuit saying the new constitutional amendment is.......unconstitutional.
TALLAHASSEE — The Florida House of Representatives has joined a lawsuit to strike down a new constitutional amendment that outlines how lawmakers must draw congressional districts.
The requirement, added to the Constitution by voters in November, would essentially ban the practice of gerrymandering, meaning lawmakers would have to draw more regular, compact districts with no favor for incumbents or political parties, rather than odd-shaped districts that favor a party or some other group.
Lawmakers fought the amendment unsuccessfully.
"The U.S. Constitution delegates authority to the state legislatures to draw congressional districts," House spokeswoman Katie Betta said. "The House believes its constitutional authority has been impeded by Amendment 6."
Now understand Florida has just elected a Governor who was caught cheating the government via his health care industry scam, and never felt the need to respond to questions about it. This is also a state where a law is being put forth saying that public school teachers who have their doctorate should be paid no more than someone with a BS or BA degree. Indeed, one of the state senators, Rhonda Storms, stated that teachers really don't even need a degree. The only people in the ear of Florida politicians are the lobbyists so it's not surprising that the Florida legislature would go to war with it's people.
So far this story hasn't gotten much traction but I expect it will shortly.
Stay tuned.
