It appears to me that there are certain topics that neither party will discuss and I think this is one of them
You seem to be the only Congressman with enough courage to tackle any issue and I pass this on to you in the hope that you give it some much needed visibility.
Everybody seems to agree that we need to create jobs and yet both sides also appear to agree that passing a law that will do this is not possible in the current environment, because it inevitably means raising the deficit or raising taxes or both.
Here is an idea which will create 8 million jobs virtually overnight and will not add a cent to the deficit. In fact it will reduce the deficit because of the taxes paid by 8 million new hires.
All we need to accomplish this miracle is to pass a bill that does two things.
1) Reduce the length of the standard work week ( for the first time since 1938 ) from 40 hours to 36 hours ( with no reduction in weekly pay ) for all workers in companies that employ more than 100 employees.
This will create the need for 8 million new hires virtually overnight and it will not cost the Government a cent. In fact it will actually reduce the deficit by the amount of new taxes that the new hires will pay plus reducing it even further by reducing the level of government aid currently being received by the same people.
2) Simultaneously allow the American Corporations which will be initially financing these new hires to repatriate their $1.5 trillion dollar overseas profit stash without paying any taxes on this at all.
While these corporations will initially bear the cost of the new hires, they will shortly pass most of it on to the consuming public and the rest will be more than offset by the increase in business which the new hires will generate as they spend their new income buying the countries goods and services.
I have yet to hear a single negative consequence of passing this legislation but if any one on this Blog feels there is truly something wrong with idea please voice that concern now.
Just for the record, I feel I ought to point out that during the Great Depression of the 30's both President Hoover and FDR proposed shortening the work week as a possible solution to the high unemployment that then plagued the nation. The House shot down Hoovers attempt and the Supreme Court killed FDR's.
Lets learn a little something from History.
If either attempt had been successful it is quite possible the World would have been able to avoid World War ii.
