A phrase I would like to see these days, have not heard it since 9/11/01, is :there by the grace of God go I. The Right's fundamental idea is inequality of position; aristocracy and serfs. Different rules for different people in different status. There is a need to divide humanity into the "good" people ( producers, co-religionists, people of ones same race) and "bad" people. Not mistaken people. Not people faced with several bad choices. Not people with severe problems whether self inflicted or not. In my New Testament there is not the word deserving or undeserving before the word poor. It is true some people abuse any system they can. The ironic thing is those who are scamming a system of social benefits are usually better at navigating the system than those it was designed for. The one in need is overwhelmed by paperwork designed to weed people out. Who they weed out is... those who need it most. I have heard of a study, do not know where to find it but said basically giving benefits like food stamps to anyone hwo asks saves money and those who can do without, generally do not want to deal with the stigma or the bother of seeking aid. Rich and poor have equal right to sleep in the weeds, except they do not. In my town "camping" is illegal. Of course a middle class person who fell asleep in the park is not prosecuted but someone with a bedroll sits down and they are in violation. No, this is not a free country. Those who divide our population into "Producers and Parasites" know which side they are on and it helps them feel better about their lives. Anyone who is envious of the people on assistance must hate their jobs and their lives. Persecutions and pogroms ( directed at anyone) begins with a demonization. Before the Rwanda massacres radio was full of hate propaganda and characterizations of the "other" as intrinsically evil and thus deserving of death. We are at step one now.
The viciousness of many of my country(wo)men astounded me at first. The Tea bag nation is ready to kill those who have "taken" their country over. At least they say so, in so many words. I would say we are heading to a civil war but only one side is armed. It will just be a massacre. and when we die, we will die, with our arms unbound Decemberists
