Well, I'm a Republican, and after seeing all of these Democrat Maryland maps here, I'm cross posting my Republican gerrymander from RedRacingHorses.com. You can draw a somewhat solid 3-1-4 (R-S-D), but I tried to max out competition here.
Other than that, there's not much to be said...
If I wanted to make MD-08 uglier by running it into Columbia, I may have made Roscoe's seat a little less Obama, but oh well.
I followed county lines while making this map, and tried to pack the hell out of MD-08, MD-05, and MD-07. Seeing as this yields 2 VRA seats, just like the Dems' map, I don't see why this wouldn't pass muster.
This map tries to create the most swing seats possible, while keeping Harris's seat safe for team R. Yes, it's possible we would go 1-7 in Democratic waves, but most years, the GOP would have 3 seats at the least.
Tell me what you think, and enjoy!
THE FIGHTING ALL OF MARYLAND!
MD-01: Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville). Even though he takes a four point hit, and doesn't live here, even the slightly tone deaf Harris should be safe here. No, Kratovil would still probably not take this seat for Team D, and he'd going for a judgeship anyway. Likely R in 2012, Safe R beyond.
MD-02: C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Cockeysville)/John Sarbanes (D-Towson). ~R+4. The flying Dutchman would be in serious trouble here. Even though he was popular as Baltimore County County Exec, Obama takes a 12 point hit here! Sarbanes probably lives a few yards outside of this seat, so he'd run here, but it is more of Ruppersberger's old seat. That would probably create a bruising primary
This could be called a toss-up or tilt R.
MD-03: ~R+1. Toss-Up in 2012.
MD-04: Donna Edwards. Safe D.
MD-05: Steny Hoyer (D-Mechanicsville). Hoyer is very popular in Maryland, and talks like a moderate, but has a very liberal record. This district is about R+1. I think he'd probably lose, but I'll call this a toss up.
MD-06: Roscoe Bartlett (R-Buckeystown). R+2. Well, this shows that running a district into MontCo isn't always fatal. Toss-up/Leans R with Bartlett in 2012, but I hope that he retires so a suburban moderate can claim this seat long term. Toss-up/Leans R.
MD-07: Elijah Cummings (D-Baltimore). Safe D.
MD-08: Chris Van Hollen (D-Kensington). Safe D. Majority Minority.
