"I've had people calling me wanting to work," Smith said. "I haven't turned any of them down, but they're not any good. It's hard work, they just don't work like the Hispanics with experience."
What is the matter with these lazy Americans. They won't work in the fields from sun up to sun down, physically demanding work, no breaks, $5 a hour, no health care, back breaking conditions, no work in winter, no compensation for injury, no safety regulations working seven days a week, week after week. The lazy swine.
The issue is not the Mexican laborers who are willing to work for that kind of money vs. even less money and worse working conditions in Mexico, the issue is agriculture and the food industry from chemical fertilizer to farm equipment to food conglomerates to super market chains to farmers want a free ride on the farm workers back. Consumers take the blame too, to pay people a living wage for very hard work means food is going to cost more money.
We see the same thing in construction industry and the hotel/restaurant industry, they want a free ride on the laborers back, basically near slave labor they can chew up and spit out when broken down.
That is the real key to the "immigration problem" as the GOP run states who are targeting Mexican laborers are finding out as the states pass draconian anti-immigrant laws and drive the Mexican laborers out but can find no one willing to fill the slave labor role the industries depend upon.
Labor reform, living wages, health care, working conditions, safety are the real keys to America's getting jobs in agriculture, construction and hotel/restaurant. Slightly higher prices, the REAL COSTS of those goods and services is the price we have to pay to fix the US economy and fix the "immigration problem" which is really a fair labor problem.
