No two ways about it, thanks to Occupy Wall Street, America's class war will be front and center in next year's presidential election. And Mitt Romney is the perfect standard-bearer for a privileged elite who profit on the blood and sweat of the poor and middle class.
It shouldn't be a surprise that Romney has always been a strong supporter of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, even when it became unpopular with the public and an albatross around the neck of the Republican Party. It's a war in which many of this nation's most economically vulnerable citizens fought to preserve and expand a plutocratic empire.
And it definitely shouldn't be a surprise that Mitt Romney would support an unpopular war of aggression while admitting that he was unwilling to encourage his own family to participate.
Mitt Romney's behavior surrounding the Iraq War has been shameful. Long after the world had learned that the Bush administration had lied us into war by fabricating evidence of Weapons of Mass Destruction(TM), Romney's presidential campaign was still cheerleading the occupation and still lying about WMD.
Mitt spoke about how the continued occupation of Iraq required great sacrifice from Americans:
"We're all concerned in America today with the high price of gasoline, but I think sometimes we forget about the high price of freedom," Romney said in an armory converted into the state's National Guard Museum.
''There are times when the price of freedom seems to go up, as it did in the great conflict known as the First World War, and then again in the Second World War, and this is another time when the price of freedom is very, very dear indeed."
But when Mitt was campaigning around the country last time, promoting an unpopular war and encouraging American kids to sacrifice themselves on the altar of Saddam Hussein's oil reserves, did he ever encourage any of his own five sons to enlist?
Gov. Mitt Romney, who has comforted the grieving loved ones of soldiers killed in Iraq and promoted National Guard recruitment, yesterday said he has not urged his own sons to enlist - and isn't sure whether they would.
The Herald posed the question as Romney - a potential 2008 White House contender and backer of President Bush's Iraq policy - was honored by the Massachusetts National Guard after he signed a bill extending pay for state workers on active duty.
"No, I have not urged my own children to enlist. I don't know the status of my childrens' potentially enlisting in the Guard and Reserve," Romney said, his voice tinged with anger.
Yeah, I bet he was angry. How dare anyone suggest that Romney would encourage his own family members to make the same sacrifice that he was encouraging other American families to make?
Mitt Romney believes that the "high price of freedom" is a price that only the lesser classes should pay. And long after it's become clear to almost everyone else that remaining in Iraq has nothing to do with protecting our freedoms, Mitt says he wants the sacrifices to continue. Apparently for no other reason than his own naked political ambition.
And this guy is the best the morally-bankrupt Republican Party has to offer.
