Rob Zerban is running for congress in the 1st Congressional District in Wisconsin against Paul Ryan. In my opinion, Ryan's fixation on cutting government spending and gutting programs like Medicare, Medicaid, Pell Grants and Social Security would seriously weaken our country. It's not just a matter of fairness (although that is extremely important). It's a matter of survival as a strong society. Although I don't live in Wisconsin, I recently sent Rob Zerban's campaign a contribution because decisions in Congress obviously affect our country as a whole. He sent back an email that captures the kind of responsible, thoughtful approach we need much more of in the House of Representatives. Somehow, its straightforward, unhyperbolic tone really spoke to me. So I'm quoting most of it below as a thank-you note to Mr. Zerban. Check out his website, too.
Thank you so much for your generous support. I was tired of turning on the news and seeing what is happening and I think you feel the same way. I cannot fix everything, but I can beat Paul Ryan and be a strong voice for a more responsible path forward.
I was able to achieve my dreams because the American people invested in me. They helped my family survive tough economic times and helped me receive an education. I know we need to stick together and focus on making our nation strong- we need the best education, infrastructure, healthcare, environment, and small business job engine. We don't get there by slashing and burning our government and leaving people high and dry in a recession.
My focus will be on delivering a clear and strong message to all Democrats and Republicans- people are demanding more. They need real answers, not just compromise and grandstanding, and they need representatives that are not afraid to fight for what is right.
Our nation has some serious challenges, and the Republican Party has been unwilling to compromise at all on commonsense legislation. They have forced our government into a standstill and gridlock during a time of crisis. This effort, led by Paul Ryan, is irresponsible.
I also see some Democrats that aren't willing to go to the mat for the working people of this country. I will be a strong voice for you every day, and urge my fellow Congressmen to be bold and brave for everyone counting on us to fix this situation.
Thank you for being a part my campaign. I look forward to making history with you on election day, and working with you to solve our problems in Congress. I am honored to have your help!
Sincerely,
Rob Zerban
