A Day at Occupy Oakland
…feels like everything I have hoped, worked, waited, and prayed for all my life…
Feels like evolution into the future has arrived.
Follow more in the under-realms...
…after so many years of disappointment and despair, after trying everything I/we could find or could imagine,
…after years of seeing every effort, every action, every movement, no matter how righteous, no matter how valid, come to just another end, once again, another defeated good intention and good effort come, again, to failure, only to go home, again, regroup, re-energize and, hopefully, find another means, another action…
… after all these years of not attaining the results we desired, no matter how reasonable and righteous, finally finding there was nothing to do but council fellow brother and sister idealists working to change the system, to council them not to be attached to the outcome, because it always looked so utterly hopeless, especially when main stream America (the 99%) had become so disenfranchised that they felt there was nothing to do about their situation than just STFU and enjoy the bread and circuses provided for them by their slave masters.
~~~But I believe in Evolution.
And somehow I just continued to believe that there must still be a chance to save this little experiment of evolution called homosapiens. There is a chance, but I certainly cannot guarantee it. Whether or not we humans accept and accomplish the evolutionary mandate is not yet certain. And if we do not accomplish the adaptation required, then “Fini, the end of this little experiment. There will be no one left behind to shed a tear!
Perhaps.
Today evolution is the evolution of consciousness.
This evolution is mandated by several thousands of years of our history. Most recently, it is mandated by the splitting of the atom, by taking into our very tiny, human hands the power of the stars, atomic fission, the power mythologically once attributed only to the gods. We have mandated that we must evolve a consciousness to that thought of as the moral equivalent of the gods. And so...
As Einstein told us: “With the splitting of the atom, everything changed, save man’s way of thinking, and thus we drift toward unimaginable peril.”
We, humankind, by our great technological accomplishments, have created :
DEATH WRIT LARGE ACROSS THE PLANET
And so, it is up to us. What we deny, as the psychologists say, is what is bound to come back writ large to haunt us.
Deal with it. This is what blocks our way forward, our future growth. Out of whatever wrong thinking, previous stage of evolution thinking, we must now deal with what is implied here. Is it ego? Is it the need to triumph over others? Is it the incredibly primitive motivation of greed? Is it fear of personal death?
This is for us to figure out NOW! There is not much time. We have only a short time to understand how we are destroying the planet and the life forms who find it home.
For years, as I despaired, but kept on being an activist, I never lost my faith in evolution. Finally I got to the point where I had to engage in what some may call “magical” thinking. When all around me looked hopeless, looked like the forces against growth forward were just insurmountable, just too entrenched and powerful to change, I relied on what some might call magical thinking, I called it the evolutionary leap forward, the 100th monkey leap into the future.
And now This Occupy Movement is exactly that ‘miracle,’ that 100th monkey, that evolutionary leap forward.
As I said at the beginning, I have waited, hoped, worked, and prayed all my life for this moment.
I would like to thank all the occupyers and to end with words from my favorite philosopher, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin:
No one who has seen this vision can be restrained from guarding and protecting it. To testify to my faith in it, and to show reasons, is my purpose here.
