Posting this because I want to nip this latest meme in the bud. Right now.
Earlier today I received this from an old high school friend of mine. A liberal.
http://www.youtube.com/...
I told him my quick thoughts on it: I totally connect with the guy's frustration and he has a great way with words, but the substances is off: our main problem is NOT the deficit. Its jobs, which has NOTHING TO DO with our current deficit.
He argued back with me a bit about how Obama's not standing up enough for what we need and I agreed - but pointed out that what we need doesn't have anything to do with the substance of what this guy is complaining about: the deficit.
I didn't hear back from him after that, and felt a little bad to poke a hole in his balloon. But the rant was just off point, and I felt it needed to be pointed out.
Then right before I leave from work I receive the exact same rant from my conservative Kin folk. Bingo.
It's a trap!
Welcome to republican distraction 201. It's no longer 101 because they getting smarter. Just like the flailing around before they landed with the Swift Boat Veterans for Rent, they're clumsy at first but they find emotional punchiness REAL fast.
I suspect with this piece that they're exploring how to go for the hip vote while also trying to undermine the black vote. They'll have little luck with latter but it could work with the former. Like I said, I first saw this from one of my liberal friends before my conservative kinfolk got ahold of it.
Let's pay attention to substance people and not get distracted by the wrapper! Because the wrapper's always fun, isn't it? That's the point of propaganda, which is basically art turned to black magic purposes.
Which makes this more like an Ayn Rant listening to. It's emotionally fun and only worth listening to critically. Sheesh.
And, credit where it's due. Subject matter side, this guy gives a great performance here that's really fun to watch. And I totally connect with his expressed complete rage in frustration with our government as an American. If i wasn't so obsessed with the finicky details of things I'd have already forwarded it a billion times. It's linked here only for inocculation purposes.
I really hope this is what he sincerely believes, and he isn't just saying this for a paycheck. Otherwise its no good for himself and his own integrity, besides being light-to-medium grade shitty. I know a performer's gotta do what they gotta do; and like Bill Hicks if an actor is doing a commercial I can look the other way. But in this case it's even worse than when great rock musicians sell their songs to market soft drinks.
Anyways, off now to an enjoyable dinner. May this spare you from some unknowing agreement with conservatives who unfortunately belong to an ideology that substitutes id for logic. It's a catchy mix that needs to be paid attention to - and then stepped away from for things that are actually good for a person.
