Tony Perkins on Fox early Friday afternoon (Still image)
Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Family Research Council, earlier Friday on Fox, saying he supports Mitt Romney's stated positions, but:
When you look at his record, there are some real problems there.
Yeah, like the fact that Mitt Romney is campaigning as a right-wing bible-thumping nut job, but governed like a Rockefeller Republican. But just because Perkins has a beef with Mitt Romney doesn't mean he's got a viable strategy for finding anyone else.
When Fox anchor Megyn Kelly raised Newt Gingrich's rise in the polls, Perkins lamented the conventional wisdom that Romney has the nomination locked up.
This goes against those who are saying, well it's going to be Mitt Romney, he's going to be the nominee.
Perkins rattled of the list of candidates who have led Romney at one point or another, but instead of getting excited about Newt Gingrich's climb upwards, Perkins said Gingrich has a big problem:
I think he'll have trouble with women, because, I think, you know, women will excuse one or two issues, but I mean, he does have some significant issues when it comes to women.
Actually, Gingrich has problems with humans, not just women. Bringing divorce papers to your wife while she's recovering from cancer isn't a problem with women ... it's a problem with the human race.
But the the best part of Perkins argument was his claim that Gingrich's problems with women are part of the reason why Republicans are sticking with Herman Cain.
That's one reason they're hanging on to Herman Cain.
So Newt Gingrich's women problems are so bad that we're back to Herman Cain? Yikes! Surely, Perkins isn't prepared to settle for Herman Cain, the GOP's resident pro-choice sexual harasser, right? Nope, he's got his heart set on another one:
Rick Santorum hasn't had his day yet in the sun. You know, who knows, he might be the next one that people turn to.
Here's to hoping!
