We are preparing to cook MASSIVE amounts of food to support the student demonstration tomorrow. Do you have food to donate? Do you have unpicked produce? Do you operate a farm? Got a lead on food we can follow up on? Let us know!
We will be having a potluck, people! Bring your finest home cooked meals for the UC Davis Quad dinner MONDAY at 6 o'clock. Vegetarian meals requested. Bring your food for sharing in a container that you don't mind losing, or HEAVILY label it with your name and phone number and it will be made available for pickup. Use duct tape to label! THIS IS NOT TONIGHT. It's MONDAY.
Over 45,000 people have signed the petition calling for Chancellor Katehi to resign in light of what happened on campus Friday afternoon when police pepper-sprayed peacefully civilly disobedient protesters. They made the mistake of doing it at a time and place when "the whole world was would soon be watching" on YouTube.
From the New York Times:
In her statement on Sunday, Ms. Katehi said: "I spoke with students this weekend, and I feel their outrage. I have also heard from an overwhelming number of students, faculty, staff and alumni from around the country. I am deeply saddened that this happened on our campus, and as chancellor, I take full responsibility for the incident. However, I pledge to take the actions needed to ensure that this does not happen again."
Well, that's nice to know. But what will Chancellor Katehi do when the tents go up tomorrow, as they surely will? (Fortunately for her, unlike Mayor Quan, the re-pitched tents are likely to stay up and be #occupied for only a couple of days, until the Thanksgiving holiday Wednesday.)
Katehi can probably avoid a confrontation for the nonce by keeping the police away, and if she has any sense she will do so. But I suspect a confrontation at some point is inevitable. After all, putting pepper on the turkey and gravy is going to take on a whole new meaning this Thanksgiving for the Davis student body.

wThe Occupy UC Davis protest is preparing for a march on the school’s campus at 12 p.m. PST. The rally in the quad comes after worldwide attention focused on the Northern California campus after a University of California at Davis police officer pepper-sprayed a line of passive students sitting on the ground. Videos of the pepper-spraying went viral, eliciting shock with the police’s casual use of violence.

8:52 AM PT: Clarknt67 (author of petition) diary on Matt Segal Calling for Katehi Resignation
As the founder of one of America’s largest youth empowerment organizations, I am frequently asked to defend my generation against charges of apathy from pundits and politicians. Many of these elders love to brand us as lazy, uninterested, spoiled, and too self-absorbed to speak out and participate in the civic process.
Yet when police chemically burn the eyes and subsequently hospitalize students who peacefully protest at UC Davis, it sends a message that apathy is indeed what is expected from us after all. If apathy was not what was expected from us, why would the police feel threatened by a few dozen students sitting down with their arms crossed? Why would the Chancellor of UC Davis call non-violent demonstration a “public safety concern?”

9:31 AM PT: Inmates have more rights than students
if a doctor sees pepper spray used in a prison, he or she is required to file a written report. And regulations prohibit the use of pepper spray on inmates in all circumstances other than the immediate threat of violence. If a prisoner is seated, by definition the use of pepper spray is prohibited. Any prison guard who used pepper spray on a seated prisoner would face immediate disciplinary review for the use of excessive force. Even in the case of a prison riot in which inmates use extreme violence, once a prisoner sits down he or she is not considered to be an imminent threat. And if prison guards go into a situation where the use of pepper spray is considered likely, they are required to have medical personnel nearby to treat the victims of the chemical agent.
Entire article is worth reading. Good stuff.
