As a social scientist, I can appreciate and wish for the many powerful wonderful impacts of spending 22% of the United States budget on education.
I will defer to Arne Duncan. I believe he can explain them all better than I can. From my viewpoint, money could be transfered from defense and homeland and medicare to education by doing little more than eliminating waste and redundancy. One result from increasing the education budget would be an equivalent reduction of cost in criminal justice. The better educated perceive, more clearly, their own potentials. They are more likely self driven toward their own potentials and less likely socially driven toward crime and so represent a much lower portion of the prison population.
