GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or thinking of quitting (or want to support quitters), please - join us! We kindly ask that politics be left out.
You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts, or access the GUS Library at dKosopedia for a great list of stop-smoking links. Check it out! Want to make sure you never miss us? Follow (♥) the GUS tag to keep GUS in your Stream.
A message to all quitters: you don't have to avoid GUS if your latest attempt to quit didn't work out. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the attempted quits as "practice" for the real quit.
Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses.
Alphonse Karr
This time of year, we're practically walloped over the head with instructions and advice vis-à-vis our sense of thankfulness, or lack thereof. We even have an entire national holiday devoted to gratitude, and it's fast approaching. Thankfulness is everywhere...as Madge used to say, we're soaking in it!
If we're not feeling particularly grateful, however, whether due to temporary circumstances or longstanding issues, we may get the sense that we're the problem. We may feel as though we're supposed to suck it up and deal with it, or to "fake it 'til we make it," feigning gratitude until it magically blossoms in our hearts.
Ah, if it were only that easy. Truth is, the holidays are really tough for a lot of people. We might be dealing with work or money woes, health issues, or simply not feel up to wrestling with the dreaded "family stuff."
Somehow, the holidays seem magnify everything, give things way more importance than they deserve, and make us feel as though nothing we do is quite good enough. We focus so hard on what's going wrong (or what might go wrong, or how someone's wronged us) that we don't notice all the things we do right, or the good people or things that help us get through the day, even when the day (or year, or decade) hasn't gone all that well.
And yeah, as much as it might irritate me to admit it, we do sometimes lose sight of the little things we really are thankful for. They might not be the usual suspects trotted out around the Thanksgiving dinner table, or even sound like much to someone who isn't you and doesn't know where you're coming from, but that doesn't mean they're not worthy of acknowledgement or celebration. And as much as it pains my nonconformist soul to hop on this predictable bandwagon, I don't think it's a bad thing to recognize and acknowledge those things we are thankful for, or to show our gratitude. We here in GUS are quite fond of our wagons, after all, am I right?
What are you thankful for this year? Feel free to let us know in the comments below, and while you're at it, feel free to fling gratitude in all directions, too.
I will start us off: I am grateful for GUS, and also pie.
Mmmmm, piiiie.

anodnhajo/dan - hope to see you on the roster again soon! :-)
Help!! As you can see, we still have a bunch of open slots on the schedule. If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting! Not sure where to start? Go here to find out how to write a GUS diary the easy way, or just ask for help in the Butt Can (Tip Jar). Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story and host for a few hours, that's cool too!
