The noble UC chancellor, Robert Birgeneau
Today's profile in courage award goes to UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau, who made the following pre-holiday moves:
1. Delayed 13 days after students were beaten by Cal cops.
2. Recorded a weak-ass apology en route to holiday destination.
3. Released statement once he was out of the area.
Via Berkeleyside:
Chancellor Robert Birgeneau issued an apology today for police tactics during Occupy Cal protests on November 9 on campus.
In a recording made while en route to spending Thanksgiving with his children and grandchildren on the East Coast, Birgeneau said he took full responsibility for the events that day and would do “his very best to ensure that this does not happen again.”
In the spirit of the holiday, I guess we should all be thankful he'll do "his very best" to avoid a repeat scenario. Of course, it's doubtful this turkey of an apology will satisfy the 20 students who've filed suit against the university.
