Walked into the Dollar Store to purchase supplies for OWS: Rochester, NY and a colorful seasonal sign read: 'OPEN FOR THANKSGIVING' Went to the checkout and told the clerk: "I'm sorry you are open for Thanksgiving'. With a sardonic tone he said: "Last year I got an extra $1/hour as holiday pay and now it's $1.50". The clerk placed the items and receipt and I wished him Happy Thanksgiving.
My face looked away. Ashamed. Gave a begrudging smile and walked away. Like it was my fault. A jilted shopper who demanded to buy barely edible goods and plastic chinese trinkets whenever I can and somehow I convinced the executive board of Dollar Store that this was in my best interest to be open day and night on Thanksgiving.
Went to Boston Market and smack in front of me is a colorful laster printed turkey sign that states "OPEN FOR THANKSGIVING... blah am - bla". It's a blur now when I read the news of all the chains, dept stores, retailers 'open for business'.
I just wanted to buy cornbread later this evening.
Not tomorrow on Thanksgiving.
Customer behind me asked for turkey(!!) and they said 'we are all out of turkey'. What? What are you going to open on Thanksgiving for? The restaurant is going to close and for what?! Serve potential customers who most likely stuffing their gullets and watching football? Corporate bosses and executives will be at their executive office suite wating for hourly reports of sale figures and reworking logistics to send more gravy to Topeka?
I was gobsmacked (still am) in infinite beffudledness (yes I know it is not a word) of what is happening to our society. So to repeat myself, they will not have turkey available for thanksgiving. Are people going to walk in saying 'ummm can I have some stuffing to go?'.
You can buy soda in extra large cups here. I guess it's a novelty.
Couldn't do it. My lips didn't want to say Happy Thanksgiving. The managers took my order with a cheery disposition and warmly said 'You have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!'.
Republicans will jump up and scream 'you lazy ass' and gleefully cheer these workers how 'uniquely American' and 'fantastic' as Fmr. President George W Bush ecstatically stated while his supporters roared in approval.
This is not necessary. Police, EMT, doctors, nurses, firefighters. Not the line cook.
Making a home cook meal, spending time with close family and friends, wearing sweats and type well past 1:30 am ET knowing I don't work tomorrow; this is not just priceless but a right and privilege every American should have, be sacred, and protected to preserve the essence of a holiday tradition.
I know it goes without saying here but please do not shop on Thanksgiving.
