The Solidarity Singalong has taken place basically every weekday (and a few weekends and evenings) since March 11, 2011, either inside the Wisconsin Capitol or at the State Street corner of the Capitol Square. The singalong has a great songbook, compiled by R. Chris Reeder of the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice (WNPJ). Chris leads the singalong pretty much every day and has done a great job of encouraging participation. The singalong draws anywhere from a few dozen to a hundred people during the noon hour, and features not only audience participation (e.g. the "Roll Out the Recall" polka dancers - whoever feels moved to dance) but also a (formerly pick-up) band called the Learning Curve, featuring a couple of guys on acoustic guitar, a banjo player, a fiddler and various other local musicians. The anti-Walker and pro-recall songs in the Solidarity Songbook include standard peace and folk songs like We Shall Overcome and Solidarity Forever (my favorite) as well as filk/parody songs written by Wisconsin citizens, and even a few originals.
Look beyond the squiggly for seasonal news...
Now, just in time for the holiday season, the Solidarity Singalong has issued a brand spanking new book of protest songs based on popular songs of the holidays. I am printer-impaired or I would print one of these babies out just for myself. Instead I guess I'll have to go to a Singalong soon and buy my own copy for the exorbitant donation of ONE DOLLAH. Now YOU can have your own copy, even if you don't live in Wisconsin and have never been near the Capitol Square. You too can excoriate Scooter in song.
See the WNPJ website for links to download PDF and Word doc version of the holiday songbook. Yours truly made a minor contribution to these lyrics so I feel personally invested here:)
