Can you imagine it? The biggest landslide in the history of US elections. All over the country our citizens willing to brave bad weather and police harassment in order to confront corporations that are ruining our lives. If only we can convince people to come out next year and vote the corporate stooges out of office
Right now, groups all over the country are mobilizing, convincing people to withdraw their money from the banksters. And send them to more responsible institutions, but it isn't really going to solve our problems. The Occupyi movement should be working just as hard to convince people to vote the collaborators out of office. This does not necessarily mean voting for candidates from the Democratic party.
The performance of the Democrats has been unsatisfactory in so many ways, constantly caving in to demands by fringe Republicans and even threatening our basic rights of Medicare and Social Security.
It is my opinion that next year we should support the election of as many independents as possible to free ourselves from this mess. We are not going to have a third-party as a choice on the ballot. But perhaps we can break the hegemony of parties by electing independent progressives. This is a better approach than primary challenges which are so unlikely to succeed. We should take this approach at all levels government. The numbers are there. We can simply harness the energy already displayed by the protesters who have been taking to the streets and we can gather enough votes to make some real change.
Obviously this is not going to work at the presidential level. There is no breaking the 2-party grip on the Oval Office but we must elect progressives to Congress who will stand up to Obama's capitulation. We need people who will protect our basic rights, including Medicare and Social Security,
Occupy the voting booths in 2012!
