Has it ever occurred to you that maybe, just maybe, Democrats just don't know how to fight.
We sit here, day after day, complaining that,
"They need to stand up and fight!"
"Obama caved!"
"A compromise isn't giving Republicans everything they want!"
I know you've said it! I can read. And guess what I also know? I've said it, as well. And then it occurred to me. What if Democrats don't know how to fight? What if what we're getting is the best that we can get?
We tend to approach things with a different mentality. We hit the streets and make signs and occupy and spend way to much time reading Chomsky and Zinn and effecting change from the bottom up. It's what we do. It's how we change the world. Elections only play a small part in the way we try to change the world. We are the ones on the street and knocking on doors and developing action plans.
Then we go and vote.
And then we sit back and wait for our agenda to begin moving forward.
And then, nothing happens and we get pissed.
Why aren't they fighting to get a public option? Why aren't they fighting to end the Bush tax cuts? Why aren't they fighting for the 99er's? Why aren't they fighting for the middle class? Why aren't they fighting the republicans?
And what answer do we get?
(crickets, crickets)
So how do we address this?
How?
We jump on the Kos and write diary after diary complaining about this and that and pondering the great mysteries that are the Democratic party. We cling to our leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Alan Grayson. We rant and rave about this administration. We whine about Harry Reid and Ben Nelson. We turn to Bernie Sanders for answers without ever really asking ourselves and having the discussion which might be the most important of all.
Maybe, just maybe, Democrats don't know how to fight.
Maybe this is the best we can get from this group because they really aren't fighters. We listen to heart-warming stories about the former boxer from Nevada and wonder where has that guy gone. Maybe that guy never existed. Maybe it's just a nice little story to give us the impression that he will fight for us.
Markos wanted us to elect "More and Better Democrats" and now we are witnessing the transformation of that great slogan to "Better Democrats". I laugh. There are fighters out there, but they're sitting with a laptop on their laps and trying to bring about change through this arena. They aren't in Washington.
But tdub901, we have Bernie Sanders and Nancy Pelosi. They fight for us. And yes, they do. But they are two among many. And the many aren't fighting for you and they aren't fighting for me.
Maybe the answer is right there in our face.
Maybe this is the discussion we need to start having.
Maybe, just maybe, they just don't know how to fight?
