Dust to Dust....
I know we all know this quotation. I also know that so many of us are concerned and active in protecting the environment. But it has occurred to me that perhaps people need to be reminded that we are in fact part of the earth. We are not really separate. We are flesh, blood, bones, sinew, muscle, water. As we destroy the earth, so we destroy ourselves. And the future of our children, our grandchildren and all of the life that teems, breathes, swims, roams and makes the earth their home.
For those who consider that they have a spiritual belief of any kind, and I mean this quite sincerely, I want to ask. How can you reconcile this destruction, this suicide with what you may believe about reverence for life in all its forms? How can you sanction or ignore your own demise as well as that of your children?
I've also been thinking of the long arc of the cultural evolution of mankind. I believe that individuation may be a necessary step in the development of our species. "I am separate. I am no longer entirely at the mercy of the wind, the sun, the tides. I can build a house, irrigate the land to grow food, travel long distances. I am in control." But only to a point. We can too easily forget that we are not the masters of this planet, but rather her children. And her caretakers.
So, I don't want to delude myself in thinking this will have much impact , but I ask again.. Will we love ourselves enough to save our lives?
