While the MSM is quick to point out the parallels between the troubles in Egypt and the overthrow of various governments, they are missing the real parallel: That between Egypt and Iran. On examination, the similarities are striking.
The population and demographics of each country are quite similar. In addition, there is a strong nationalistic feeling in these countries that sets them apart. For the most part, Egyptians think of themselves first as Egyptians and religious identity is secondary. This is very similar to the Iranian population.
The Iranian model (refined) is to let the demonstrations continue for awhile, promise reforms and refrain from government violence. Throw the demonstrators a few bones. Then bring in private forces to put down the demonstrations, while the government stands by. The demonstrations will be broken up and people, fearful of repercussions, will stay home or go underground.
We can hope that pressure from the US and other nations will force real social, if not political, reform and the lives of the population will improve. If that were to happen, real political reform could follow.
