Steve Herrington in the Huffington post wrote this interesting article about the effects of the Citizen United ruling on the rights of unions. Read it. But there is another side effect that I think Democrats could leverage to their advantage. More below.
Republicans have been hammering entitlements recently. They say everyone needs to sacrifice and are attempting to put the burden on the less fortunate. Welfare is on the chopping block along with many entitlements. Well, If welfare is on the block why wouldn't corporate welfare also be on the block? Corporations have now been defined as the same as private citizens so why isn't their welfare cut too? By not only satisfying the Republican's objective that all welfare recipients sacrifice equally it would also satisfy the requirements of the Constitution. The military complex has always been our biggest corporate welfare recipients. Why not use the Citizen United ruling to cut the military complex's welfare and move closer to our founding fathers desire of not having a standing army! It would slash our deficit. Besides reducing the deficit, reducing corporate welfare would hamper our ability to be an imperialist power mirroring the one our founding fathers fought against. The imperialism we endorse is exactly the reason they didn't want a standing army for the country. We have become what we detested. Who would have thought that the Citizens United ruling would do so much to cut the deficit and realign the country with the vision of our founding fathers?
