As someone who lives -- and was born -- in Madison, I get a little tired of so many folks around the country telling me and my fellow Badgers how much we need a visit from President Obama. And I must respectfully differ from my fellow Wisconsinites who insists that a presidential road trip to Wisconsin is some kind of dire necessity.
As you may have noticed, even though it was 18 degrees and snowing heavily, 100,000 of us managed to turn up for today's rally and make our case -- even though our friend from Illinois (late of D.C.) had business elsewhere.
There are lots of "middle-of-the-roaders" and even Republicans here who are opposed to Gov. Walker's depredations. Many of these folks don't like Obama at all, and we'd very possibly lose their support were Brother Barack to show up here.
Also, there are those of mushy-middle-to-center-right sentiments elsewhere in the country who DO still think Obama's okay, but who very possibly might not were he to show up here. It would be spun as "meddling," and many of the Prez's marginal supporters would buy it.
So by all means visit Wisconsin, Mr. President. C'mon out this spring. We'll go canoeing on the Kickapoo or Black River. You'll love it, I promise.
For now, though, you attend to your business, we'll attend to ours.
