It seems that some people will just never have enough money. Some people are rich enough to have anything they want, ten times over, but they still want more.
Now, someone who can't get enough porn, we say they have a problem. Someone with seventy-five cats living in their house, we say they have a problem. But money? Not a problem. You can never have too much money!
But what about people who would see the middle class crushed in order to further enrich themselves? What about those who would turn our nation into a banana republic just to satisfy their endless greed? Isn't that a problem? Isn't there a point when concentrated wealth starts to hurt our country more than help it? Until we can actually sit down and talk about earnings and wealth without the cries of "Class Warfare!", the rich will continue to get richer at everyone else's expence.
How much income is really enough before we start asking people to give back some to the country that made it possible for them to earn so much in the first place? How about five million dollars per year? That's nearly one hundred times the median income. Think about it. These are people who can afford seven thousand dollar shoes. Now, there's not really any harm if someone wants to pay that much for footwear. But what about when they buy up all the media and conrol everything you read or see on television? Or buy up enough politicians so they can write the laws? Or they start tossing billions around on Wall Street like it was a big casino until they break the bank? It's already happening. And we've seen the results. Greed is not good. After a certain point, it becomes a sickness just like those people who can't throw anything away.
Individuals simply don't need wealth past a certain point, at least not all of it. But our country does. Our bridges do, our sewer systems do, our mass transit does. We could achieve so many things if we did them as nation, instead of a collection of spoiled brats lording it over the common folk.
It wasn't that long ago that there was a seventy-percent income tax bracket in this country, and we did quite well. Is five million too little? What about ten? Any suggestions?
