The Egyptian citizens who held out through the night to hold onto their position inside Liberation Square saved their Revolution. They showed incredible courage facing down the hoards of armed thughs who were more than willing to maim and kill them to route the Revolution from the heart of the nation. They faced fire, bricks, knives, and guns. In doing so they faced down the shadowy leading edge of a security appaeratus that has held the Egyptian people in bondage for decades, and they did so with the sacrifice of life and the burden of multiple horrendous wounds. They did so in the dark, they did so isolated with no hope of mercy from their enemies and no chance of reenfocements from their allies. They held their ground and when the light of dawn arrived it shown on a determined resistance, bloodied but now bowed, holding high their banners of freedom in the heart of the Egyptian nation.
Had Mubarak's thugs broken their spirits and not just the bodies of hundreds of those heros, had the forces of repression prevailed and spread forth into that sacred square under the cover of night,it would be the regime today holding the upper hand over the people of Egypt. Under the pretense of preventing further violence, the Army would have cleared that Square and closed it off from all of the people. There would no longer be a gathering point nor foucs point for the world to watch, and support, the emergence of a new Egyptian nation. But becausae of a diverse band of Egyptian heros, male and female, young and old, by the dawn's early light a different image emerged. The world saw the grace and strength of the Egyptian people. The world awokes to heros who gave proof through the night that the fight for the rights of all people to justice and equality will never be abandoned, standing proud, with their banners still there. There are many heroes in the world, but for this moment thsse people are mine. MAy Allah be with them.
