You may recall the kerfuffle caused by a NH State Representative recently regarding the best disposition of the mentally ill. When asked by a constituent to place funds in the budget for the mentally ill and those with developmental disabilities, Rep. Marty Harty (R-Barrington) responded with the following:
"I'm sorry I don't agree with your side. I and several of us in the state house believe in eugenics...I think the world is too populated. So we believe that there is too many defective people...You know the mentally ill, the retarded, people with physical disabilities and drug addictions - the defective people society would be better off with out. I wish we had a Siberia so we could ship them all off to freeze to death and die and clean up the population. If you women didn't try to give yourself abortions, you wouldn't end up with defective children"
After a week's worth of outrage here in NH and some national attention brought to this wretch of a man; it has finally come to this . . . .
The Concord Monitor reports:
Rep. Martin Hardy, a Barrington Republican, resigned from the New Hampshire House days after making comments supporting eugenics.
Today, Harty, a first-term representative, gave his letter of resignation to House Speaker William O’Brien.
“We both agreed that this is what is best for the House to move forward and focus on critical issues,” O’Brien said.
Harty’s resignation will become official tomorrow, and there will be a special election to fill his seat.
The 91-year-old Harty made national news last week when he told a constituent that he supported eugenics to get rid of “defective people.”
Let's hope Barrington, NH puts a Democrat in Harty's seat.
