In 1968, I was a Connecticut Yankee defending our country in North Dakota. The middle class and the under class were having their boys killed in Vietnam, a war we as a country were against. LBJ a great President in so many ways would not change course. The Progressives in our country demanded a new direction, and Senator Eugene McCarthy said he wanted the nomination of the Democratic Party for President. Very quickly the attention of the country was focused on this fight for the direction of the Democratic Party and our country's future.
I went to the North Dakota State Convention and met, and talked Senator McCarthy. We heard his speech to the convention and were filled with hope. In our conversation, he told me of the dangers of Big Oil, and told the convention of his concern for our country's future.
Now he, and we knew that he would not win the nomination, but he believed that the fight to change the future was worth the effort.
Is that fight worth it today? Where is our Eugene McCarthy that will step forward and challenge these polices and methods? Once someone steps forward or is drafted into this role, the country will explode, just like Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan. There will be a new focal point in the debate. No longer will the debate be so dominated by the right.
We must let the country view Progressives as people that can not, and will not fight. We must fight, and fight hard as a group, and by putting forward a candidate to challenge these polices and methods, we change our future. Right now the debate is between the center right and the extreme right, we can not let this time past when so many of our brothers and sister are hurting, and the corporations that got us here are buying our future leaders with more tools now than ever before. The truth needs a messenger, and listening to the farmer in Wisconsin at the most recent rally tell it like it is, makes me believe that our country is hungry for a new direction, and more truth telling, just like 1968 and the country is not satisfied with the lack of fight by this White House and the lack or promised change.
Who will lead this fight? Please step forward.
