Today, American billionaire Donald Trump offered temporary refuge to Libyan ex-foreign minister Moussa Koussa at Trump International Golf course in the Barbados.
Within hours, a US State Department official indicated that the United States could not support such a move and indicated that the United States would seek to extract information about the 1988 Lockerbie bombing from the Libyan foreign minister who defected and fled to Britain on March 31st.
Denying that his offer was an attempt to burnish his foreign policy credentials in anticipation of a presidential campaign, Trump said, "I am a single digit golfer with a Scottish mother, so I understand the raw feelings surrounding the Lockerbie bombing. Nonetheless, Trump International Golf Club is home to an 18-hole par 72 course set across 300 acres of the 1200 acres wide island, fit to dazzle the minds of golfers and can provide the luxury expected by a former Middle East leader."
"Except for the week of the Trump Million Invitational – a 54-hole tournament held in May for 100 golfers who pay £8,000 for the privilege of taking on non-tour pros off scratch – Moussa Koussa might have the place pretty much to himself", Trump said.
After being pressed by Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., at a hearing on Capitol Hill, Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg said the administration is "pursuing" the ex-official, Moussa Koussa. "No offers of immunity have been given to Moussa Koussa, and this extends to Mr. Trump's offer of refuge," Steinberg said.
In London, government officials have accused the Libyan ex-official of helping devise the bombing that killed 270 people over Lockerbie, Scotland, most of them Americans. Scottish officials have already said they want to interview him about the Lockerbie bombing, and Menendez cautioned Thursday that the United States must not let this opportunity slip away.
