Note: I'm not affiliated with United Wisconsin, just a fan.
According to the citizen activist Michael Brown who launched United Wisconsin, he has received 100,000 pledges since launching the site on February 24th--that's 10 full days of pledge gathering, on the internet, and we have nearly 20% of the commitments we need to achieve the goal of Ex-Gov. Scott Walker in 2012.
Important things to note:
- Information regarding the recall of the state senators is here. Even though the Governor's recall is months away it helps that effort to get people to make a commitment now.
- All individuals who have signed the pledge have provided a Wisconsin address.
- The biggest anti-Walker facebook group only has 50,000 members. This petition has legs way beyond social media sites.
- Citizen activism has caused the WI Democratic Party to jump on board with recall efforts. The WI 14 showed bold leadership and everyday Wisconsinites responded.
- We need to blow past the requirement of 540,000 pledges/signatures because Walker can and will challenge signatures on the petition. (see p. 6)
- According to the recall rules cited above, individuals signing a recall petition must be "qualified electors" which is defined:
*Qualified elector is defined in s.6.02, Stats., as a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older, who has
resided in the election district for at least 10 days before any election at which he or she offers to
vote (and who is not disqualified by virtue of one or more of the impediments described in
s.6.03, Stats.).
I am not in the legal field in any way so I welcome correction, but to me this seems to mean that individuals signing a recall petition do not have to be registered voters, but must simply be qualified to be a registered voter. This is an important distinction.
Even if the protesters number fewer, the number of Wisconsinites ready to throw out this Governor continues to grow. He's finally agreed to raise taxes on someone--the working poor.--I guess he just wants to give us a new reason to recall him every single day.
