Dateline Laramie, WY: The appearance last April by Bill Ayers at U of W got some of the local teabaggers upset. As a result, an anonymous rich guy paid half of Coulter's $20K fee to speak here this year and address the student body. And republican activists ponied up the rest.
She got some heckling, but mostly a supportive crowd.
Because hey, in any group of Americans, we're gonna have some people who want to hear her give a talk titled:
Why the liberals are wrong about everything
Then, Mid-East Affairs Expert, Ann Coulter explained that, "Obama and liberals only endorse military action in countries where U.S. interests aren't at stake, such as Libya."
So she thinks that conservatives launch wars against things that are important, and we liberal democrats support unnecessary wars.
Glad she cleared that up. Did anybody protest her appearance at this institution of higher learning that paid her $1,000 a minute?
Some students opposed to her talk sought to turn the tables by holding a fundraiser for gays, lesbians and their advocates, which took financial pledges based on the length of Coulter's talk.
"It's a good thing I only spoke for 26 minutes," Coulter said later.
Do we have spokespersons on our side who can counter this kind of thing? In Alan Grayson, Al Franken, Jon Stewart, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Anthony Weiner, Bernie Sanders, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow - we do have some strong voices on our side.
Still, we seem to lack power in the media. The problem is that people like Coulter get treated seriously, as if they have a meaningful point of view.
But no, "liberals are wrong about everything" is not an argument. That's a comedy skit. Coulter is fine with me if she's being presented as a comedienne. A clown act. A live version of Fox's failed "Half-hour News Hour." A "Weekend Update" for the teabagger set.
Fine with me.
But presented as a political philosopher? An academic on a par with Bill Ayers? She isn't William Buckley. She's Victoria Jackson.
