Principle #1 (of a series)
We are good people who promote the wellbeing of all
This on it's surface sounds like a typical liberal nugget but we might examine this declaration a little bit closer.
I believe we all want to be thought of as "Good People", liberals as well as ultra-conservatives, Middle Eastern or Scandinavian, urban as well as rural, wealthy or poor, developed nation or third world, young or old, most human beings want to be thought of as "Good". You know.... "had good intentions","of good character","someone you can depend upon","wanted to do the right thing","a really outstanding person","someone you can trust".
It's good news and darned true, we mostly all want to think we are doing the right thing no matter how misguided. (More Below)
Anyway, back to the subject at hand, why are we good people who care about the well-being of all?
Because we have learned as we have matured that co-operation, clear rules and fair play work to make society healthy for all of us. We may all be able to win!
So if you're for fair rules and their enforcement, fair representation for all, carrying an attitude of co-operation and problem solving you are quite probably a good person.
Why should we care about the well-being of ALL people?
Because it is in our self interest. We need each other for our birth and personal care, for ideas, and labor, for customers, for vendors, distribution, health care, training, inspiration and to "love". When most around me are doing well, it's quite likely I'm doing well too. Real grownups know these things.
We are good people who promote the well-being of all
So that is what I want to be. A good person who seeks good things for everyone. Because it is a point of view holding great hope and high aspiration. It also feels good to hold this viewpoint of significant power.
