Progressives (like me) believe that the highest card in our deck is the "Social Justice" card. We believe that everyone, if they only thought about it, would support the idea that government should aim to establish a society where everyone can prosper and enjoy individual liberty; a society where the poor are not expendable; and that laws should be formulated by a democratic government rather than be left to the actions of the "free market".
Republicans disagree. To them, "social justice" is a term of contempt and fear, as is "the race card".
The United States was founded on the idea that the members of a society each have a God given right to participate in formulating the rules of society. It is also based on the idea that a community should be free to establish a government which establishes justice as a goal, and that government should not serve only the rich.
Republicans condemn and ridicule the concept of social justice, and even the idea of community action. The term "the race card" has become a term of contempt because of its apparent contradiction to our respect for the idea "equality". However, it should now be evident that the Republicans have equal contempt for the broader idea of social justice. They worship individualism, and believe that government should be forced out of the business of trying to foster a healthy community. Public schools, public roads, public water supply, public power company, public health department, public zoning laws; all of these are seen as the enemy of individualism. Are we ready to confront the phony philosophy of Ayn Rand head on?
