I've been thinking about the word Cracker, and I was wondering what everyone thought of it.
I grew up in the valleys of Whitey Whitetown, and as a pale, freckled white guy, I remember Cracker being used in my 'hood as a term of endearment between friends who stood in solidarity against the slings and arrows of privilege and opportunity. But there was another use of the word Cracker. A sinister use.
I refer specifically to its use in reference to Triscuit™s. Of course, as I grew up, I learned that a Triscuit™ is emphatically not a Cracker, but a baked square of woven grains. Yet some people like to refer to Triscuit™s as Crackers. Cool, whatever, but I have not lost my sense of "Cracker" in the sense that it is about whites refusing to bow beneath the oppression of good, well-funded schools and walking freely without being hassled by the cops.
When I see someone eating a Triscuit™ and they ask me, do you want a Cracker, or see this in a commercial for Triscuit™s, I get the gestalt that I don't know what the word "gestalt" means. Also, I think, "It's not a fucking cracker! It's a Triscuit™!"
What do you think? Is that wrong? Should we transform the word cracker into meme of someone who also can't use the word "meme" properly? More importantly, should we demand that "cracker" be used only to mean white guys?
Just a question, curious if I can get away with being an asshole.
