We can now add Arnold Schwarzenegger to the list of Republican politicians with stealth offspring. These leaders not only have extramarital affairs (certainly common in both major political parties), but they take these affairs to another level. For millennia these bonus progeny were often had by strong leaders, and in some societies it was even expected of them. But given today’s values it is just awkward and embarrassing, particularly for a leader whose party attempts to claim high ground in family values debates. It suggests a personal life in disarray, and duplicity in one’s values. Arnold was never the family values politician that so many Republicans ascribe to be today, yet his extra-familial parenting may still take his legacy down a notch among many of his supporters. On the plus side, Strom Thurmond and Carl Paladino are now in better company.
