Scroll down for this week's project. On tap this week: Math in Literature!
Reminder: Look for "The Inoculation Project" every Friday afternoon!
The Inoculation Project: Math & Science in Red State Schools
Solid science education is the best inoculation against ignorance.
The objective of this weekly project is to combat the anti-science push in conservative America by providing direct funding each week to math and science projects in red state classrooms.
Fortunately, a conduit organization for achieving this direct funding already exists: DonorsChoose.org. DonorsChoose.org allows you to make direct contributions to specific classroom projects (all vetted), resulting in tremendous and immediate impacts from small dollar donations.
Each week we focus on funding a single small-dollar project in a traditionally red state classroom. These are projects whose funding requests are expiring within the next week. If the projects are not funded by their expiration date, they die.
This week, we have a project that has a couple of weeks before it expires. Sometimes the pickin's get a little slim toward the end of the school year and through the summer, so we relax the rules a bit!

Teacher's Comments:
My Students
Learning difficult math concepts through literature combines two subject areas and doubles learning impact. Making abstract concepts understandable by using concrete examples will help my students reach their reading and math goals.
My second grade class resides in a high poverty area. They have become really excited about receiving new activities and learning games to help them reach their goals. The students need many materials to enhance their learning experiences. We have a large English Language Learner population. This school does not have adequate funding for all our educational needs. We require many more supplies and resources to reach all students.
My Project
"Responding to Literature" will provide varied, exciting activities with step by step directions that will cement students' learning of the elements of literature. Math objectives will come alive using the "Math Through Literature" Collection. Grammar usage is an altogether wonderful experience with the colorful, silly examples included with the "Grammar Book" set. Students become animated and engaged with lessons presented in active hands on formats. Active, engaged students are motivated to learn and will meet their goals and objectives more quickly than students who are not motivated.
The donors who give to this project will be directly responsible for motivating my current second grade class and many classes to come. Motivation is the key to success for these students. When children are not excited about school and learning, they do not become engaged. With your help, I will be able to make coming to school and learning the highlight of their lives!
Please consider rescuing this project by making a small donation to it. Small dollars make a big difference.

Good News
While we weren't the ones who finished it out, our last project, Going Green in the Desert, got a nice boost from us on its way to getting funded!
Here's what the teacher had to say:
What a blessing all of you are to teachers like me. My class just finished watching some caterpillars build cocoons and metamorph into butterflies. They loved it and so did I. This is exactly the type of learning that should be occurring in classrooms every day. Now with our terrarium we will observe this habitat and learn so much more.
I firmly believe that the kindness we show others comes back to us. May the kindness and generosity you have shown for this project and others be returned to you many times over. I assure you this terrarium will be the basis of many great lessons.
Thank you and please know that you do make a difference in the lives of children!
