Words fail me. It's like Mitch Daniels deliberately wants to destroy all that is good with education in Indiana.
The Indiana School For The Deaf is one of the foremost schools in the nation for bilingual education for deaf children. It was the first in the nation to offer free instruction to any student in OR out of state. It considers English and ASL (American Sign Language) as equals. And as anyone with sense knows, ASL must be treated as an equal language and taught to deaf children.
So what has Mitch done?
He appointed ANTI ASL members to the board of the school.
Let me repeat that. Mitch Daniels has appointed four members to the board of one of the foremost schools for the deaf in the entire country, three of whom are OPPOSED to teaching ASL alongside English. In fact, of the seven board members, only ONE is deaf.
But parents are fighting back. Here is the full video of the first meeting parents had with the new board members:
Part 2 is here:
And here is an update from Marvin Miller, President of IAD and a father of four children in the school. It is not captioned.
I am not good at this activism thing, especially on this issue. I hope that by bringing this to the attention of this community, we can get the ball rolling nationally on this.
