I'm pro-life; Pro life in prison without parole for some crimes. In other words, I'm anti-death penalty. I will not consider it. Not when DNA has proved time and again that 12 human beings can be wrong. Not when even conservative Republicans (e.g. George Ryan of IL) are in favor of a moratorium on the death penalty and the rest of the civilized world has abolished it.
This is not how the term 'prolife' is typically used. As a matter of fact, most self proclaimed pro-lifers are ONLY concerned about the 9 months in the womb, not the years, even decades afterward. They don't seem to care much about providing the newborn and his/her mother with shelter and a source of heat in January. They don't seem to care if the parents wages are inadequate to pay the utility and grocery bills, let alone any of the other expenses that occur when raising a child.
"Pro-life" as it is currently used also seems to miss the fact that from the moment the baby is born until she dies of old age, she'll need to breath clean air to stay healthy. Humans also need to drink clean water. Children who don't have clean water to drink are much more likely to die from preventable diseases such as dysentary. The legislators touting their "pro-life" bona fides seem to have hit or miss records on issues such as the environment and public health.
Which raises a bigger question: Is pro-life solely opposition to abortion or should it be a broader position? Why are we allowing the George W Bushes out there to call themselves pro-life when they alllow the environment to pillaged, don't support living wages and have no qualms about executing people who are too poor to afford Johnny Cochran? If anyone can claim to be "pro-life" shouldn't it be the liberals who both protest the death penalty and join/support Unions, who are also active in the Sierra Club? What is Pro-life?
