On some of my social network interactions in the last 24 hours, I keep coming across the idea that "Obama is so egotistical that he he said 'under my leadership' to start the speech off... a leader never put himself like that in a speech", and other variations thereof.
I don't have the stomach to listen to Rush or watch Fox, but I figure it has to be coming from somewhere.
Of course, Obama did no such thing. He started by declaring this a victory for America:
"Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children."
And later, after discussing the intelligence activities that led up to the action, he noted that he was responsible for the action.
Contrast this, of course, with the following from October 7, 2001, announcement of the invasion of Afghanistan:
"Good afternoon. On my orders, the United States military has begun strikes against al Qaeda terrorist training camps and military installations of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. These carefully targeted actions are designed to disrupt the use of Afghanistan as a terrorist base of operations, and to attack the military capability of the Taliban regime."
Arrogant? That's certainly in the mind of the beholder.
But apparently, Bush was not uppity egotistical enough to bother these critics ... while the fact that Obama is President of the US and Commander in Chief of the US Military obviously continues to grate on some people.
