I know it's not often that we get good news out of Arizona but to me this is about the best news...and it couldn't happen to a better guy.
Crawled outta bed this morning to find this media advisory in my inbox (gonna just clip it for the important stuff)
On January 31 - Recall petitions were taken out and they must be returned within 120 days, or May 31st. Despite all the political pundits who said it had never happened and could not be done, volunteers with Citizens for a Better Arizona continued to talk to voters to demand that Senate President Russell Pearce be recalled. They never gave up and they kept talking to voters to give them a voice in democracy. Not only did they collect 7,756 signatures they continued to engage voters in every precinct in LD 18 and they gathered more signatures than Russell Pearce received votes in 2010.
Volunteers recruited other volunteers and they engaged people to be part of history to recall Russell Pearce and his extreme agenda that has done nothing to stop foreclosures, help businesses or restore jobs. Citizens for a Better Arizona will officially name May 31st Recall Russell Pearce Day.
ed note: boldadge mine
That's right the petitions to recall Senator Pearce have more signatures than the number of votes he received last year!
Repeat after me kids:
RECALL
But the work isn't over. First the recall election date has to be set- that's a headache in and of itself since the Republican Sec. of State gave the recall organizers the wrongdue date for petitions in order to force the recall to be held soonest so now it will be either be late this year or next year, that's the bad news.
The good news is it gives organizers plenty of time to find the best Democratic candidate in the district to hand Sen. Pearce his walking papers once and for all. It also gives them to organize and recruit volunteers, raise money etc.
Want to learn more about this amazing demonstration of grassroots organizing and Democracy with a capital D? I'm hosting a blogger call with Randy Parraz tonight at 9 pm EDT. Message me here on Kos or email me at progressivepst at gmail for call in info!
Update: Someone in the comments asked how they could donate to the recall effort...here's the link: Recall Pearce Donations
