The Vigil diary is like a chapel and not a place to argue or debate. It is not the place for that. Respectful discussion is welcome. If you have a disagreement with something in a Vigil and feel the need to argue, feel free to take it outside and write a diary about it – but please don’t disrupt the contemplation of others in the Vigil itself.
I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my son’s vision for his life. Son is envisioning himself moving on to college in fall 2012. He is thinking of a career in either journalism or sports management—or a combination of these two. He envisions completing high school with almost a full year of college under his belt, as his high school offers advanced placement classes and college courses from Duquesne University. By the time he graduates from high school, he will have over 30 college credits. He is excited about his life to come, and I am worried.
My husband knows he has a job at least until December. After that—the company that bought out his company will be doing further cuts. They are running on an approximately 6-month cycle of firings. He has survived the first 2 cuts. It is my husband’s job that pays the mortgage and other bills. My “high paying” teaching/speech therapy position comes nowhere close to paying for these things, let alone college.
And Son’s college vision may have to wait. He knows the circumstances and is working hard to contribute to making his vision a success. Son makes excellent grades and works. He is hoping for a scholarship, so he is studying like a mad man for the SAT to improve his scores, yet again. His vision for his life came first, and now he is taking action.
So, I am working on another vision. A vision of a good economy and jobs. Of, at least my politicians (liberal democrats), doing the jobs I voted for them to do. Of a nation working together on health care, affordable higher education, quality free public education, and so many other things.
We need to work together to make this happen. What is your vision for this country and for the political process needed to bring focus to our elected representatives? How do we ensure the people who will get the job done are elected and that those we elect will do the job we elected them to do? We need a way to communicate our important visions for this country to those people sitting on the fence. 2012 is coming soon. Envision it, and then go out and do!
